The Reading Food Pantry Grows Fresh Produce in the Reading Community Garden at Mattera Cabin!

The 2023 expansion of the Reading Community Garden at Mattera Cabin includes 14 raised beds growing produce for the Reading Food Pantry! We are very grateful for a generous grant from the Reading Rotary that paid for the beds, soil, irrigation supplies, tomato supports, and several blueberry bushes. Mary Parr donated netting and poles to protect the blueberry bushes. We are so thankful to Bob and Jackie King, who donated many, many tomato, eggplant, and pepper plants and to the Women’s League of Reading for an additional generous grant that paid for plants, seeds, and other supplies. We also thank the volunteers who have helped us plant and maintain the beds and the town staff who gave us the space and helped make the community garden a reality.

In addition to tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers we’re growing cucumbers, string beans, carrots, zucchini, sweet potatoes, greens, and herbs and look forward to having fresh produce for our neighbors later this summer and into the fall.

Come visit us at the garden (1481 Main St.) and if you have extra produce from your garden this season, please feel free to drop it at the pantry during our donation hours on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00.
